Sure, they weren’t as safe, but old planes and vehicles and furniture and what not all that look way cooler than stuff today. Vintage aesthetics and all that jazz.

This armchair historian agrees with you. I get the daily emails from Shorpy, and I often find the backgrounds of the photos more interesting than the main subjects. It is the backgrounds that give so much interesting depth and fills out so much of people’s lives.

Never heard of Shorpy, but I know of them now, and just browsing through a bundle of the photos that pop up on Google are awesome. My favorite so far is this one:
I’m thinking it’s a classic 4 door beetle, but I’m not sure if it’s running for the post office or delivering supplies somewhere. It’s just completely packed and with the pump on the right and the sign for the post office it’s all really sweet.

Shorpy is an amazing site. Thousands of super hi-res photos scanned from negatives, many taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration who were sent out to document poverty in the US. I was going to post that stagecoach photo one day this week. You can get completely lost on that site.
